Qype founder launches 9flats, an AirBnB for Europe

While AirBnBs Rent a holiday home from a local formula has proved popular in the US, its still relatively unknown elsewhere in the world. Pouncing on this opportunity, Qype founder Stephan Uhrenbacher has launched a European rival based on the same idea 9flats.

Opening for business today after having been in stealth mode for three months, the service is very much like AirBnB, withaccommodationthat users can rent directly from owners. The 9flats name comes from the page design, which will always show nine places to stay. Although, like its more established rival, it offers accommdation around the world, 9flats is specifically targeting the European market.

However, Germany-based Uhrenbacher is keen for 9flats not to be seen as Just another European clone of a successful US startup. Hes focusing on making discovery of perfect places to stay a key USP for the site. At present, this manifests itself through a simple, Hunch-like Match & Magic picture quiz to help narrow down your perfect destination, although additional features will be built in over time.

However, if the world ends up just seeing 9flats as an AirBnB clone, that might not be a bad thing. The startup is backed by an undisclosed amount of VC funding from eVenture Capital Partners, a firm experienced in successfully backing clones. In 2010 three of its investments in the group buying space were acquired by Groupon.

9flats is available to try nowhere, with a selection of accommodation that takes in Europe, South America and South Africa.

Flipboard needs to branch its content out from US/UK, heres why

Earlier this month, an eagerly anticipated iPhone app was finally launched as Flipboard took its highly acclaimed iPad app to the phone. The app has been out for a few weeks and, with the deafening chorus of cheers fading, Ive found myself shunning its beautiful and innovative design for the simple fact that its content isnt relevant enough for me. Compared to Zite , which may not be as aesthetically pleasing, Flipboard comes up wanting on content. Zite is, among others , an app which aggregates content from my social web Twitter, Google Reader and others giving it to me in a magazine style layout. Though it lacks the page flipping ingenuity of Flipboard, the reading is more varied, which is ultimately what Im looking for from a social magazine. Digitimes: Apples iPhone 5 to include smaller screen and metal chassis

Contray to previous reports that suggested Apples next-generation iPhone would include a 4.2-inch touch screen panel, Asian technology publication Digitimes reports that the device will feature a smaller 4-inch panel, adapting the rear of the device to ship with a metal chassis instead of reinforced glass.
