Britney Spears Becomes First Google+ User to Reach 1 Million Followers


More than 1 million Google+ users are keeping tabs on Britney Spears, making her account the social networks first to break through the seven-figure threshold.

In reaching the milestone, Spears retains her title as the most-followed person on Google+, ahead of Google CEO Larry Page and rapper Snoop Dogg.

Google+ is just shy of turning 6-months-old, so the pop stars 1,! 078,900 followers still pale in comparison to the fan bases she has built on competing social sites: 15.7 million fans Like her Facebook page and 11.9 million followers monitor her Twitter activity. Spears surpassed 10 million Twitter followers in October, which means shes gained roughly 2 million since then.

Here are the top five most-followed people on Google+, according to Social Statistics.

BritneySpears.com features a gigantic Google+ icon, which likely contributed to her building the services biggest following. Like other users, much of the content she posts on Google+ is similar to what she posts on her Facebook Page and Twitter stream. Her posts attract heavy engagement. Most recently, she posted, Still glowing! About to jump on a plane to Planet Hollywood in Vegas. Throwing a Bday Party for Jason at Chateau Night Club. So fun. Xxoo. That Dec. 16 post has 842 +1s and 500 comments so far.

Google unveiled Google+ as an invite-only beta social network in June, eventually opened it to the masses in September and now has north of 40 million users.
